Clash with people could split Egypt’s army, favor radical putsch, sources claim

Arab diplomatic sources warned of ‘disastrous consequences’ of a clash between Egypt’s army and protestors. Such a clash, sources warned, could be a signal for radical organizations inside Egypt’s armed forces to seize power in the country.

The consequences of such a putsch would not be limited to Egypt. They would certainly spell over to Egypt’s relations with Israel and with the US.

It is no secret that the highest echelons in Egypt’s army enjoy economic privileges which make them reluctant to depose President Mubarak. Some high ranking officers, even, own businesses outside the military, sources said.

Radical organizations have bred inside the officers corps, sources said, part of which are against the Peace Treaty with Israel.

Such officers condemn US ‘complicity’ with the Mubarak regime.

Sources concluded that the US Administration recognizes the gravity of the situation and is highly worried about the dire consequences of an army clash with the people.
