LAHORE: The official website of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has pulled off the names and pictures of the Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik and 28 other serving and retired officials of the Pakistan Army, Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Central Investigation Agency (CIA), Intelligence Bureau (IB), Special Branch (SB) and Police who had been accused of having committed ‘grave crimes against humanity’ and against whom the London-based MQM chief Altaf Hussain used to demand stern action.
Before joining hands with the PPP to form the coalition government in the Sindh province, the MQM website (www.mqm.org) used to carry a list of 28 officials from the civil-military bureaucracy who they accused of the alleged ‘genocide’ of the ‘Mohajir community’ in Sindh, especially in Karachi. Those in the list, which has now been pulled off from the official website of the MQM, included two former Corps Commanders of Karachi, two former director generals of the ISI and the IB respectively, a former interior minister, a former Additional Director General of the FIA (Rehman Malik), two former Home Secretaries of Sindh, two former Inspector Generals of Sindh Police, two former DIGs (Sindh), three SSPs, three DSPs and 11 SHOs who had served in Karachi. All those mentioned in the list had been holding coveted slots during the tenures of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, when military operations had been launched in Karachi.
The names placed on the MQM website were projected as those responsible for the ‘genocide of the Mohajir nation in Karachi’. These included Former Corps Commander Karachi Lt. Gen. Muzaffar Usmani, former Corps Commander Karachi Lt. Gen. (retd) Naseer Akhtar, former ISI Chief Lt. Gen. (retd) Asad Durrani, former Interior Minister Major General (retd) Naseerullah Khan Babar, Major General Shami alias Captain Baloch, Brigadier (retd) Amanullah, former in charge of ISI in Sindh Colonel (retd) Obaid, former in charge of the ISI in Sindh Tariq Lodhi, former director general Intelligence Bureau Masood Sharif Khattak, former additional director general of the FIA Rehman Malik, former home secretary Sindh Wajid Rana, former home secretary Sindh Naveed Ahsan, former Inspector General Sindh Rana Maqbool Ahmed, former Inspector General Sindh Afzal Shigri, former DIG Karachi Shoaib Saddal, former Deputy Commissioner Sukkur Subhagi Khan Jatoi, former Superintendent of Hyderabad Jail Razzaq Cheema, former DIG Sindh Farooq Ameen Qureshi, former SSP Special Branch Yousaf Baloch, former SSP Central Karachi Deen Mohammad Baloch, former SSP Sukkur Nadir Hussain Khoso, former DSP Liaqatabad Qamar Ahmed, DSP Shah Mohammad Shah, DSP Abdul Hameed, SHO Rao Anwar Ahmed, SHO Chaudhry Ashraf, former SHO New Karachi Police Station Taufeeq Zahid Khan, former SHO Liaqatabad Police Station Sarwar Commando, former SHO Orangi Town Police Station Haji Nadeem, former SHO Azizabad Police Station Ghazanfar Kazmi, former SHO Zeeshan Kazmi, former SHO Jauharabad Police Station Azam Hayat, former SHO PIB Police Station Haider Baig, former SHO Korangi Police Station Ejaz Shah, former SHO Gulbahar Police Station Chaudhry Aslam and former Inspector CIA Police Javed Anjum.
The web link carrying the list used to demand the setting up of a high-powered judicial commission comprising judges of the Supreme Court to investigate the ‘extra-judicial executions’ carried out against ‘innocent citizens’ under orders of these officials. The MQM website used to claim that these officials were involved in the ‘ethnic cleansing’ of the party office bearers, workers, supporters and their relatives.’ The website claimed, after the launching of army’s operation clean-up in June 1992, over 15,000 ‘Mohajirs’ were ‘extra-judicially executed’, thousands are languishing in jails on false charges and thousands others have been maimed for life. Before being pulled off, the material on the said link used to state: “It has been a normal practice of the Punjabi police officials posted in Karachi to arrest innocent people on false and fabricated charges and extort money for their release. Hundreds of Mohajirs have been forced to pay millions of rupees in bribes to these corrupt policemen to avoid false arrest and torture”.
However, as things stand, Interior Minister Rehman Malik and the MQM Chief Altaf Hussain enjoy exemplary relations now-a-days and the former FIA official and a close aide of the President often travels to London for consultations with Asif Zardari’s foe-turned friend.

MQM is not a ‘mohajir’ party…… any more than PML Noon is the party of the Sharifs and their business associates. That is why although the feudal establishment-sponsored ‘haqiqi’ is dead as a dodo, Mian Nawaz’s own party now has a split PML Qaaf faction in his own Punjab province.
