Karim Sadjadpour is a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, where he focuses on Iran and U.S. policy toward the Middle East. Last Friday, Iran held a presidential election won by Ebrahim Raisi. Diwan interviewed Sadjadpour after the final results were out to discuss the consequences of the election and what it will mean for a country at a crucial time in its history—as Iran continues to negotiate a return to the nuclear deal with the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, plus Germany, and amid speculation about who may succeed Ali Khamenei as the supreme leader of Iran.
