The City of Long Beach stands firm for peace, unity and understanding. Although the lives of Palestinians and Israelis have the same value, and all human life is precious. Recognizing the current humanitarian crisis in Gaza and condemning the attacks on Israel. Supporting the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination. Israel also has the right to defend itself. Palestinians and Israelis alike deserve dignity, security and to live without harm. The City Council called on federal leaders to support negotiations that lead to a permanent ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and the safe passage of food, water, medical supplies and other life-saving aid into Gaza. A peaceful solution will achieve an end to Hamas\u2019 attacks on Israel, and protect the lives of civilians in Gaza and Israel.<\/div>\n

The council voted in favor of the declaration after hours of comments from the audience attending the session, the majority of speakers from the \u201cLong Beach Group, United for Peace,\u201d composed of Palestinians, Muslims, Christians, and Jews of various backgrounds who support Palestine. While a minority spoke of rejecting the statement because it is impossible to say, \u201cHow can a free and independent state defend itself!!”<\/div>\n

The city joins a growing list of California cities such as Cudahy, Richmond, San Francisco, Sacramento, Santa Ana, and Oakland that have approved similar measures.
