Furthermore, we denounce the collusion between the State and a known militia leader\u2014one internationally accused of committing crimes against humanity\u2014and specifically against Patriarch Sako.<\/p>\n The undersigned believe that the President\u2019s decree and concomitant campaign are intimidation tactics employed against Iraqi Christians, driving them to forced migration, in order to seize their properties. It is also reflective of an attack on religious freedom, which is protected by Iraq\u2019s constitution, per Articles 42 and 43.<\/p>\n The undersigned would like to express our support and commendation of the forced removal of Patriarch Sako for speaking truth to power, defending his persecuted community, and safeguarding the properties of Iraqi Christians, and those of the Chaldean Church.<\/p>\n We believe that what Patriarch Sako and Christians have experienced in Iraq is an extension of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria\u2019s (\u201cISIS\u201d) coercive strategies initiated in 2014, which were designed to drive Christians to forced migration, and seize their properties.<\/p>\n The undersigned request the following:<\/p>\n \u00b7 To revoke the Republican Decree issued on July 3, 2023 No.31 of 2023 .<\/p>\n \u00b7 To ensure the safe return of the Patriarch to his seat in Baghdad and provide him with due protection so that he can fulfill his religious and spiritual role, as well as his administrative duties in overseeing the properties of the Chaldean Church.<\/p>\n \u00b7 To stress the Iraqi government\u2019s duty to protect the lives and properties of the Christian community; and to return the properties that have been seized since 2014, so that the forcibly displaced individuals can return to their homes and businesses.<\/p>\n \u00b7 The action taken by the Iraqi president is unprecedented in Iraq\u2019s history.
